ESOL Intermediate Course ::
 
Entry Requirement:
Any recognised course equivalent to year 7 English course.

Fee:
This course is a continuation of the foundation course. The four modules of the course deal with conversation, reading, writing and grammar respectively. This course develops more difficult idiomatic speech, everyday vocabulary development, and listening comprehension. Also develops reading skills, comprehension of more difficult reading selections and learn how to write short, simple paragraphs. This course reviews the basic structures of English grammar and develops the production of complex English sentences.

ESOL INT 01 Intermediate Conversation
A continuation of ESOL F01. This course places emphasis on idiomatic speech, everyday vocabulary development and listening comprehension.

Learning Outcomes:

This module seeks to prepare students for college level academic or workforce study by advancing them from high beginning to high intermediate level in the following English language skills:
 
  • Listening comprehension
  • Oral Fluency
  • Active Vocabulary
  • Pronounciation
 
After finishing this module, the student should be able to perform the following language functions at a high intermediate level:
1. Listening Comprehension:
 
  • Predict the direction a speaker's discourse will take.
  • Identify speaker's main idea and details.
  • Guess meaning from context.
  • Summarize the discourse.
  • Make inferences.
  • Take notes on a lecture.

2. Fluency:

 
  • Express ideas and emotions on a given topic.
  • Ask for clarification from others.
  • Compare opinions and discuss differences.
3. Vocabulary:
  • Understand and use new vocabulary relevant to given topics.
  • Understand and use idiomatic expressions presented in discourse.
  • Expand understanding of the meaning, usage and word forms of vocabulary items in different contexts.
 
4. Pronounciation:
  • Understand and use appropriate word and sentence stress.
  • Understand and use statement and question intonation.
  • Understand and use correct pronunciation or plural forms.
  • Understand and use common reductions and contractions.
  • Understand and use pauses between thought groups.
  • Understand and use contrastive stress for new or contradictory information.

ESOL INT 02 Intermediate Reading

A continuation of ESOL F02. This course develops reading skills and comprehension of more difficult reading selections.
 
Learning Outcomes:
This module seeks to prepare students for college level academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following objectives:

  • Developing reading skills and strategies such as understanding main ideas, supporting facts and graphics in texts.
  • Acquisition of 1,000-1,500 new vocabulary words.
  • Improving fluency in reading through the use of extensive reading texts developing critical thinking skills.
After finishing the module, the student should:
  • Acquire a reading recognition vocabulary of approximately 1,000-1,500 words.
  • Read with comprehension texts of appropriate difficulty in the narrative and expository rhetorical modes.
  • Identify the main idea of a text.
  • Locate specific information and supporting facts in a text.
Use reading skills in the following areas:
  • Derive meaning from text using pre-reading, skimming and scanning
  • Use context clues to determine meanings of unfamiliar vocabulary
  • Use critical thinking skills to interpret information presented in graphics such as pictures, charts, graphs and tables.

ESOL INT 03 Intermediate Writing
A continuation of ESOL F 03. This course develops vocabulary skills, both written and oral. Students learn to write short and simple paragraphs.

Learning Outcomes:
This module seeks to prepare students for continuation into a higher level course and ultimately for college level academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following objectives:

  • Strengthening student awareness of the basic principles of organization of the single-paragraph composition, focusing especially on the role of the topic sentence, examples, details and the conclusion.
  • Strengthening student awareness of the nature of the writing process, focusing especially on the areas of effective prewriting, composing, revising and editing.
  • Strengthening students' skills in the basic principles of sentence combination, focusing especially on the role of subordinating and coordinating conjunctions.
 
After finishing this module, the student should:
  • Be able to write a well-organized paragraph of between 11-15 sentences.
  • Be able to choose a topic and then write an appropriate title.
  • Be able to write a basic outline of his/her paragraph.
  • Be able to write a topic sentence, a conclusion and examples with details for his/her paragraph.
  • Exhibit familiarity with the use of coordination and subordination. The paragraph should have a variety of sentence types, and not consist of all simple sentences.
  • Exhibit familiarity with the main stages of the composing process: pre-writing, composing, proofreading and revising.
  • Exhibit familiarity with basic rules of capitalization, punctuation and proper academic essay format.
