ESOL F01 Beginning Conversation
An introduction to basic English grammar. Emphasis is placed on correct verb forms, parts of speech, sentence order, capitalization and punctuation.
 
Learning Outcomes:
This module seeks to prepare students for college level academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following objectives:
  • Introducing students to the essential elements of grammar.
  • Strengthening students' abilities to produce the new grammatical structures in a variety of communicative contexts.

 

After finishing this module, the student should:

  • Use BE to form affirmative and negative statements, yes/no and WH-questions in the simple present, past and future tenses.
  • Use high frequency action verbs to form statements and questions in the simple present, present continuous, simple past , future and with models.
  • Use nouns (singular and plural count and non-count and possessive) as subjects and objects.
  • Use personal pronouns (subjective, objective, and possessive) and indefinite pronouns as subjects and objects.
  • Use certain high-frequency verbs such as NEED, WANT, WOULD LIKE + noun or infinitive.
  • Use THERE + BE in the simple present and past tenses.
  • Use common prepositions of time and place.
  • Use the imperative to make commands and LET'S to make suggestions.

ESOL F02 Beginning Reading

This module is a beginning course in reading English. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary building, reading skills and simple spelling.
 
Learning Outcomes:
This module seeks to prepare students for college level academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following objectives:
  • Introducing reading skills including word forms, synonyms and antonyms, and finding the main idea.
  • Building vocabulary including acquisition of estimated vocabulary of 500-1,000 words.
  • Increasing awareness of spelling, dictionary usage, and interpreting the author's purpose.
  • Carrying out an extensive reading program through the use of graded readers.
  • Developing elementary critical reading skills: learning to recognize support for a thesis in a text.
After completing this module, the student should:
  • Read and understand a passage of about 150-200 words.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with a target vocabulary of 500-1,000 words.
  • Use pre-reading activities to anticipate the meaning of a reading passage.
  • Be able to identify synonyms and antonyms of target vocabulary.
  • Be able to select the main idea of a passage.

ESOL F03 Beginning Writing
A course devoted to expanding vocabulary, developing pronunciation skills and simple spelling.
Learning Outcomes:
This module seeks to prepare students for college level academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following objectives:
  • Introducing students to basic English rules of capitalization, punctuation, and paragraph format.
  • Introducing students to various common sentence patterns, from simple sentences to the basics of coordination and subordination.
  • Most importantly, building basic knowledge of paragraph organization with emphasis on developing topic sentences, support, concluding sentences and the use of basic transitions.
After completing this module , the student should:
  • Use capital letters at the beginning of sentences, correct end and internal (as germane level) punctuation.
  • Correctly spell vocabulary germane to the level.
  • Have mastery of correct verb forms for simple present and present progressive tenses and familiarity with simple past, past progressive, and simple models.
  • Write with mastery of simple sentences and basic compound sentences with AND, BUT and SO.
  • Write with familiarity of basic complex sentences with WHEN,WHILE, BEFORE, AFTER and BECAUSE.
  • Generate ideas through prewriting.
  • Organize and write a correctly formatted simple paragraph of 8-10 sentences, which would be 80-125 words, with a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a concluding sentence.
  • Revise a paragraph whose errors have been indicated.
